ArcStrata has a wide network of research-active specialists working in many areas of biotic and palaeoenvironmental analysis, including: palynology (terrestrial pollen & spores, marine & freshwater algae and forensic palynology), ostracods, diatoms, molluscs and plant macrofossils.
We believe that effective data integration is key to creating robust interpretations and that the total is greater than the sum of its parts. As such, we are always keen to understand our clients' needs and to help interpret biotic proxy records in the appropriate context, in order to provide the most added value possible.

We provide a wide range of methods for the reconstruction of palaeoenvironments. Our services include, but are not limited to, the analysis of: pollen, spores, plant macrofossils, dinoflagellate cysts, algae, acritarchs, ostracods, molluscs and diatoms.
Our flagship desk-based analytical service combines traditional pollen analysis with analysis of freshwater and marine algae and other non-pollen palynomorphs. This allows us to give added value by providing multiple lines of evidence from single-slide analyses. The data acquired can be used for palaeoenvironmental reconstruction and biostratigraphy (dating sediment layers by their fossil content). This powerful tool allows simultaneous analysis of a wide range of sedimentary environments across the full onshore-offshore transect.
Using our extensive experience across different disciplines along with careful sample processing, we can provide valuable information that many standard pollen analysts can’t (including algae and dinoflagellate cysts, fungal spores, insect parts etc.) that have vital applications in many areas, from coastline reconstruction to site formation processes to anthropogenic impact on natural and cultural landscapes.
ArcStrata can work with your technical team to build and refine understanding of the sub-surface. We can perform biostratigraphic analyses on samples from excavations, outcrops or boreholes (including core-plugs or cuttings) in order to build a model of depositional environments and stratigraphy. This information can help you solve a range of engineering challenges, from fulfilling your geo-heritage planning requirements to testing ground models for off-shore construction.
We have particular expertise across the Neogene and especially with thick and variable off-shore glaciated Quaternary landscapes. As such, we can help Quaternary Engineering Geologists, by contributing to biostratigraphy and palaeoenvironmental reconstructions in order to provide insight into their stratigraphy and formation history. This has various potential applications in shallow geohazard mitigation, infrastructure design for natural resource facilities (such as power export cables) as well as traditional biostratigraphy.
ArcStrata provides high quality desk- and site-based services tailored to your project requirements. We can help with palaeoenvironmental reconstructions and dating (e.g. pit/ditch/post-hole fills, occupation layers and floodplain successions), as well as providing evidence for past human activity. We are highly experienced in the recording and interpretation of both natural and archaeological sedimentary successions using interventions such as trial-pits, auguring and windowless samples (boreholes).
ArcStrata offers a geoarchaeological consultancy service to archaeological units, providing advice, logging and interpreting geoarchaeological sediments, sampling for palaeoenvironmental analysis and characterising landscapes for archaeological site context. We also provide written schemes of investigation and geoarchaeological desk-based assessments and professional geoarchaeological reports.
